There has been a rumor recently that Colossus will be getting the "Iron Horse treatment". The Iron Horse treatment is manufactured by Rocky Mountain Construction in which a wooden coaster's wooden track is replaced by new IBOX "Iron Horse" steel track. The IBOX track is found currently on New Texas Giant at Six Flags Over Texas and Rattler at Six Flags Fiesta Texas is recieving IBOX track in 2013. The transformation would take about almost a year and if Colossus is re-opening in 2014 with all new IBOX steel track, it will close at around August 2013 for the transformation. Now, the IBOX track will take the "classic feeling" of Colossus which opened in 1978, but the IBOX track could easily make Colossus the best roller coaster in California. I'll finish this post with a quote of Screamscape's post about the rumor:
(1/10/13) Screamscape sources tell us that management at Six Flags Magic Mountain may have received early confirmation that Colossus will be tapped to be the next Six Flags coaster to get the Iron Horse treatment following the transformation of Rattler to Iron Rattler at Fiesta Texas this year. No word yet on just how much will be changed, but the iconic support structure is expected to remain essentially the same. If true, look for Colossus to go away forever before the end of the year, though it seems like the park may try to promote the final days of Colossus rather than just quietly shut it down, so you may get some early warning.
